NEW MEETING TIME/LOCATION FOR OCCUPY LA GENERAL ASSEMBLY

A proposal was passed at Tuesday night’s General Assembly that included a provision about how and where we would conduct and gather for General Assemblies from this point on if OccupyLA is evicted from City Hall. It was passed without hard block that a General Assembly would be held starting Wednesday at 7:30 pm and from that day on indefinitely at the City Hall South, North, or West Steps, or wherever we can assemble at City Hall.”

Please distribute far and wide. I’m only subscribed to OccupyLA general list and the OccupyLA_Demands list. Please forward to other lists, blogs and chats.

United at Union Station [UPDATE 11/29]

unitedunionstation

When: December 3rd at 9am to TBD (based upon # of Occupations participating).

Where: We will meet at Lincoln Park in downtown Long Beach at 9am, and take the Blue Line to downtown LA. Once downtown we’ll assemble at LA Plaza Park across the street from Union Station by 11am. Occupy LA is going to investigate whether or not food is possible to have there. More details to come. At 12 noon we will cross over and enter into Union Station. It is our understanding that you will need a valid ticket to be inside the station.

Who: Currently Occupy Long Beach, Occupy Los Angeles and Occupy Pasadena have confirmed they will be participating. Please forward this information on to anyone you know at other Occupations. We would like as many Occupations participating as possible.

What: Each Occupation will perform a 3 to 5 minute skit. As of today, there are 3 Occupations participating, and the plan is to have each Occupation perform in a row at each half an hour mark. The remaining time in the half hour will be used for what is called Invisible Theater. In the Invisible Theater section, we will break off into small groups (perhaps 5 each) and give voice to how we are part of the 99%. We will do this as though we don’t know one another, planting other team members in key places to stimulate conversation with those 99%ers passing by and not yet participating in the exercise. This is similar to Guerrilla Marketing. The only limit is your team’s creativity. If there are only 3 Occupations participating, we will continue this process 4 times from 12-2pm and then begin Theater of the Oppressed from 2-3. If more Occupations join, we will revise the schedule to accommodate, perhaps staggering different Occupations’ skits into different 30 minute sections (e.g. 1st half hour Occ1, Occ2, Occ3. 2nd half hour Occ4, Occ5, Occ6, etc.). This will be finalized at LA Plaza Park between 11am and noon, unless it’s clear beforehand who exactly will be participating. Immediately following Theater of the Oppressed will be joint committee meetings to plan the next Inter-Occupation action.

Why: This is both an opportunity for networking between Occupations, and an opportunity for Outreach. We can both join forces, and meet people where they are. It is being coordinated for a Saturday in hopes that people will be in less of a rush to get out of the station.

How: Each Occupation is coming up with their own skit and own themes for their skit.
Long Beach is intending to give voice to those 99%ers that cannot actively participate in the movement. We will be meeting on Thursday at 7pm in front of City Hall in LB this week to devise our methods. Sunday the 20th from 10am to 1pm we will begin collecting stories and then the following week we will begin formulating how to best represent them.
Los Angeles will be doing a skit on getting money out of politics and connecting the big issues to the seemingly smaller ones.
Pasadena will be doing a skit on heathcare and gentrification.

Back to Business

The weekend saw some tense negotiations between police who were planning to remove OLB supplies from Lincoln Park and Occupiers who ultimately held the day (and night!) Here’s the recap of GA consensus and discussion over the weekend, including upcoming events! Check the calendar in the sidebar (on the home page) for further information, or click the ‘Calendar’ link above.

Summary of OLB developments for Thanksgiving weekend:

PRESS RELEASE – OLB told to clear supplies by 11/27@10pm

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

OCCUPY LONG BEACH GIVEN ULTIMATUM

OLB told to clear park of stored items by Sunday night

November 26, 2011

About 3:30PM on Friday, November 25, LBPD South Division Watch Commander Lt J. Liberman and two other officers served verbal notice to Occupy Long Beach (“the occupiers”) that the group’s belongings (other than sleeping bags and blankets in use at the time) must be removed from the park and the sidewalk by this Sunday, November 27 at 10PM or they will be confiscated and “donated to the Rescue Mission.” When questioned about the reason, Lt Liberman, who would not give his business card to us, responded that there had been several complaints from neighbors and the public about the “eyesore” at Lincoln Park. The occupiers requested a written notice but were told by Lt. Liberman, “You don’t have a right to a written notice.”

The occupiers reminded Lt Liberman that at its last meeting the City Council had requested a report from the City Manager and City Attorney regarding the use of the park by OLB for exercise of our first amendment right to peaceful assembly, and to explore the City’s options to work cooperatively with OLB. They pointed out that this report was on the City Council Agenda for Tuesday, December 6, when a decision would be made. Lt Liberman said he was aware of this.

The occupiers expressed their surprise, then, that the LBPD – which is not a policy making body – would take this drastic action before the Tuesday decision of the City Council – which is the policy making body of Long Beach. The confiscation would dramatically change the policy worked about weeks ago between the Civic Engagement Committee of OLB and representatives of the offices of the City Manager, the City Attorney, Special Events, and the LBPD. This agreement included that if there were problems on either side they would meet to discuss it. Lt Liberman barked “I am not going to debate philosophy.”

He added that if the occupiers were dissatisfied they could call the City Attorney or they could take it up with City Council. They responded that his Sunday deadline prevented OLB from discussing the LBPD’s ultimatum and appeal with any of the City officials before the threatened confiscation. The officer’s response: “we’re just here to enforce the law.” Lt. Liberman repeated “We are bending over backwards to work with you” and similar phrases several times.

Wal-Mart Security Harassing Protesters

This was taken during the ‘Think Big Buy Small’ march on Saturday. Now if this man were being harassed by the police and someone filmed it, how would he respond?

LBPD Prepares to Confiscate Occupy Long Beach’s Tents

Speaking with the Occupiers at Lincoln Park shortly after the police informed us they would be removing the tents from the sidewalk. This despite nearly 24 hours of heavy rain today and temperatures in the low 50s.
