General Assembly Notes September 5th, 2012.
Occupy Long Beach General Assembly convened at 6:30. Facilitator: Karen.
Agenda:
- Free Market (Betzi).
- Alinsky teach-in.
- Elections in two months.
- OLB Video Press Release (Arlen)
Announcements:
Update on the Labor Day action (John):
OLB sent a delegation of about a half-dozen to the march in Wilmington. Union turnout was lower than previous years according to Tommy, possibly due to heat.
Update on Peace Summit with LBAPN (Karen):
The Peace Summit will be held Sept. 22nd from 10am-3pm at the Congregational Church, at 241 Cedar Avenue. The church’s phone number is 562-436-2256, and their email is office@firstchurchlb.org.
Agenda Items:
- Free Market (Betzi):
The Free Market has been held at Bixby Park on the last Sunday of each month, with disappointing turnout at the last. Betzi proposes moving date to coincide with other Sunday events. Betzi will confer with the others responsible for the Free Market and other Sunday events.
- Saul Alinsky teach-in:
Internal Communications will contact Marshall for more information.
- OLB Video Press Release (Arlen, Wayne, Betzi, Erin):
“99 of Us,” Long Beach Unplugged’s music-video tribute to OLB, has 600 hits on Youtube. LB Unplugged will also present OLB with proceeds from the iTunes sales of the song once they are available, and schedule a performance to celebrate.
Arlen also proposes making monthly video press releases, possibly 30 seconds in length, and can also edit the footage for us. Betzi, Wayne and Erin have collaborated on a script for such press releases, on the subject of genetically modified food. We need to find a garden environment in which to film the press releases, and youths interested in appearing. Possible locations discussed the New City School’s garden, or the garden located at First and Elm. Wayne is in charge of shooting the press releases, and will contact New City. These press releases are expected to be ready by mid-October. - Elections in two months (Arlen):
We need more enthusiasm and visibility to see a good turnout in the upcoming national elections, especially among younger voters who skew progressive. The Progressive Caucus makes up 1/8th of Congress, and we should all take the time to contact our representatives.

Expose Kellogg’s Tour of Genetically Modified Food:
Sunday, September 16th, 3pm-5pm at the Honda Center in Anaheim, 2695 E Katella Ave.: “We will be at the Honda Center announcing to all the people that Kellogg’s does not want consumers to know if their food contains Genetically Modified Ingredients. Since they have poured over half a million dollars against the labeling initiative, Kellogg’s agrees that labeling would be costly, but they have changed their packaging for the Olympics. Why not for OUR RIGHT TO KNOW?!!
Kellogg’s contributed $ 632,500 Against Our Right To Know, against Prop 37
Boycott Kellogg’s ! Yes On 37We are meeting before the action at Kelloggs Honda center. Its the Starbucks in the shopping center east of the Honda Center. The streets are Katella and Stadium Promenade. Its a 1/2 block walk to where we will be at, which is the corner of Katella and Douglas.
