80th annual Great Sand Castle Contest

From Sonny:

The 80th annual Great Sand Castle Contest is this weekend. Meet on the beach at the Granada snack bar between 9:00 and 9:30, Saturday, August 11th. If you can, bring large buckets, shovels, trowels, and straws. Yes, straws. Unfortunately, I will be out of town, but whoever gets there first should say that you are with me. I registered under my name (Sonic Pencr) and not OLB, because they did not ask for organization names.

Aside from creating the sculpture, it would be great if we could have at least a couple of people there all day Saturday and Sunday, 10 to 5, to engage the hundreds of spectators who will be looking at the sand sculptures.

NEWS

We have received word that Patrick O’Donnell, Chair of the
“County/State Legislative Standing Council Committee has cancelled the
meeting scheduled tonight until after the June 5 election.

The Committee was to consider the City Council Resolution to approve
the Homeowner Bill of Rights which was referred to it by the full
Council on May 8. We will inform you when it is rescheduled. All
Committee meetings are public and people may speak for 3 minutes.

Note when the Council agreed to send it to Committee it was stressed
by several Council members that “time is of the essence” because of
the legislation right now in the CA State Assembly. Chairman O’Donnell
even said we’ll get it scheduled “I hear that there is a real urgency
in the room . . .”

THANK YOUS and REPORTS

First off we would like to thank all the folks who came
out and helped out Sunday and supported the teen memorial. If it wasn’t
for Richard Madeira and Jack Finley the idea of a teen memorial would not have
happened. They deserve a lot of credit for their vigilance in making this
memorial a reality and in time for Memorial Day. It was a lot of work, but we
think it was worth it. Every group pitched in and it paid off! Our
message was heard.

Great coverage from the local Press Telegram on the front page.

Fox 11 news also had coverage on the link below. They were there all day and into the
evening and we were surprised at how it all came out.

Also propose arranging an OLB contingent with prepared talking points at next meeting. Erin F. proposed holding a picnic to build support and plan for such an action.

Occupy Long Beach celebrates Earth Day with a Human Peace Sign on the beach
followed by live music and activities at Bixby Park

Occupy Long Beach Presents:
Earth Day 2012
Sunday, April 22nd
12:00pm – 2:00pm @ on the sand at Temple Avenue
2:00pm – 9:00pm @ Bixby Park (Broadway and Junipero)

On April 22, more than one billion people around the globe will participate in Earth Day 2012.
People of all nationalities and backgrounds will voice their appreciation for the planet and demand its protection. Together we will stand united for a sustainable future and
call upon individuals, organizations, and governments to do their part.

While the a majority of American people call out for alternative energy sources, our government only responds to the interests of these big polluters. The very corporations that lobby our government in order to pollute, publicly admit that climate change is an issue, but ignore it in favor of continued record profits for Wall Street.

On Earth Day April 22nd 2012, let’s stand together and raise awareness and celebrate our glorious planet!

The day begins at noon on the beach at the foot of Temple Ave. to create a “Human Peace Sign”. Come out and stand with your community and tell the world we want Peace for our Planet and her People.
We will have photographers on the bluff to take pictures and all participants can request a digital copy of the official photo.

At 1:30pm we will walk to Bixby Park for a day filled with live music, teach-ins, workshops and activities.
Bring a blanket or chair and prepare to settle in for a fun filled day.

Announcing a special visit by: Vermont’s finest Ben & Jerry’s will stop by the park to give out free samples!
Ben & Jerry’s is committed to family farms, fair trade, climate justice, peace building and proud supporters of the Occupy Movement.
Taken from the Ben & Jerry’s website: We have a progressive, nonpartisan social mission that seeks to meet human needs and eliminate injustices in our local, national and international community’s by integrating these concerns into our day-to-day business activities. At this critical time, Ben & Jerry’s is focused on getting the “Dough” out of politics and overturning the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision.
